- Although I don't agree with the tact I do agree that internal modems
- are not a good idea, generally. As an ISP I have literally endless
- calls from (usually newbie) customers with internal 14.4's. When
- working out problems they usually can't tell whether or not they are
- connected. Also, I've found that a LOT of tech support time is wasted
- because when they have to reset the modem the entire PC must be cold
- started. This means 1 minute wasted under windows 3.1, and 3 minutes
- or more wasted for windows 95. I very much dislike them. In
- addition, depending on the software, you normally do not have the
- visual aids afforded by the status lights. With this experience
- behind me I cringe every time someone calls with an internal modem.
- Another generality is that for *some* reason I have mucho more trouble
- with internals, especially when it comes to set-up strings. They can
- ruin your day.
